The Experience
The High Mountain Half Marathon provides a refreshing autumn escape, drawing runners seeking cooler temperatures and a destination race experience. This point-to-point half marathon, first run in 2016 and now in its 9th edition, takes participants on a scenic journey from Porter Mountain down into Pinetop/Lakeside. Runners are bused to a 6:00 AM start, ensuring a cool, crisp morning as they descend through cedar and pine forests.
The course, described as a downhill run with great views, presents a unique challenge due to its high altitude, typically between 7,000-8,000 feet. With a 4-hour time limit, it accommodates a median field of around 354 finishers, with recent editions seeing about 358 participants. The race attracts runners from approximately 8 states, and a loyal ~36% return each year.
Spectator support is noted as good towards the end of the race, and the finish at Blue Ridge High School track offers solid production. Runners can expect ample aid stations, plenty of restrooms, and a satisfying post-race spread, complemented by unique finisher medallions and custom wood trophies for top finishers.
