The Experience

For nearly 30 years, the Tucson Marathon has offered runners a rare gift: a net-downhill course through the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Starting at the iconic Biosphere 2 near Oracle, the point-to-point route descends through Catalina and Oro Valley, finishing at Pima Community College Northwest Campus. The downhill profile—dropping roughly 1,600 feet over the marathon distance—makes this a prime target for personal bests and Boston qualifiers, especially when the weather cooperates with its typical 43–69°F range and low humidity.

The course is entirely paved, including a stretch along The Loop Bike Path, and offers sweeping views of the Sonoran Desert and surrounding peaks. The field of about 1,260 runners (drawn from 46 states) creates a big enough crowd to feel like an event, yet intimate enough to avoid crowding. With a repeat-runner loyalty of 18%, the race has built a quiet following among those seeking a fast, scenic winter marathon. The full marathon, 50K, half marathon, and relay give options for every endurance level, and the festive finish line at the college campus provides a welcome reward.
