The Experience
The Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble invites runners into the scenic Susan River Canyon for a trail running adventure. Participants navigate a loop course, experiencing both the historic Bizz Johnson Trail and the dynamic singletrack of the Southside trail.
This race is designed to showcase the natural beauty of the area, featuring elements like rockslides and vista points along the Southside trail. The course offers a mix of terrain, with the Bizz Johnson Trail providing a different character than the flowy singletrack on the opposite side of the river.
Runners can choose from multiple distances, including a 22K, 14K, and 7K, all starting and ending at Hobo Camp. The race route even reverses on odd years, offering a fresh challenge for returning participants.
Race-provided description
Are you ready to SCRAMBLE? This amazing new trail race showcases the best of the Susan River Canyon! Runners will head up the Bizz Johnson Trail from Hobo Camp for the first half and return via the beautiful and flowy singletrack on the Southside trail across the river. The Southside Scramble has 3 different distances to choose from, a 22K, a 14K, and a 7K. All races start and end at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area. On ODD years, we will run a reversed course! For 2025, all races go out the Southside Trail and back on the Bizz Johnson Trail. For the Dirty Devil's 22K, runners start on the Fire Road above the Hobo Camp Day Use Area and take the "outbound" portion of the Bizz Johnson Trail approximately 6 miles all the way to Devil's Corral. From Devil's Corral, runners turn and drop down to the Susan River, crossing over a seasonal foot bridge, and enter the stunningly beautiful Southside trail with its rockslides, vista points, and flowy single track all the way back to Hobo Camp. The Tunnel's Blast 14K starts on the Fire Road above the Hobo Camp Day Use Area and takes the "outbound" portion of the Bizz Johnson Trail approximately 4 miles to the entrance to the first railroad tunnel. Before heading into the darkness of the tunnel, runners will veer off onto singletrack, where they climb over the top of the tunnel to reach the Southside Trail. From there, they will enjoy the stunningly beautiful Southside trail with its rockslides, vista points, and flowy single track all the way back to Hobo Camp The "Hobo's Special" 7K starts on the Fire Road above the Hobo Camp Day Use Area and heads approximately 2 miles up to the Twin Bridges Access connector to the Southside Trail. You'll get just enough of the Bizz Johnson's steady climb to excite your senses for the fast, flowy Southside's single-track return. Finishers: At Hobo Camp Day Use Area, participants can enjoy a fun finish line party with food and beverages. All finishers will receive a custom medal and a custom beach towel just in time for a cool dip in the Susan River! Overall awards will be given to 1st through 3rd finishers (M/F/NB). Age group awards will be given to 1st-3rd AG in 10-year age groups. Start Times: 7:30 Dirty Devil's 22K 7:45 Tunnel's Blast 14K 8:00 Hobo Special 7K Aid Stations: Aid stations will serve fruit and salty snacks, Heed electrolyte, and water. This is a cup-less race so runners should have their own hydration systems. Hydrapak is our cupless racing partner and runners will be provided with a collapsible cup at packet pickup. Aid Station #1 is located on the Bizz Johnson Trail at the lower end of the lower tunnel at Mile 3.8. This aid station serves both the 22K and the 14K. Aid Station #2 is located on the Bizz Johnson Trail at the Devil's Corral at the Southside trail turnoff at mile 5.94. 22K Aid Station #3 is located on the Southside Trail just above the Twin Bridges access trail. This is approximately 2 miles from the finish. This aid station serves all three race distances. For ODD years, with the reversed course, the Aid Station distances are slightly different. Additionally, the Twin Bridges Aid Station reverts to just hydration. This race is Trail-Sisters Approved. There will be equal space on the start line for women and women's hygiene products at all aid stations and the finish line. Event Parking: Carpooling is HIGHLY encouraged as parking at Hobo Camp is very limited. Here are your options: 1. Hobo Camp - Most parking is on the middle and upper levels. There will be volunteers helping you park very tightly. There is also some parallel parking along the entrance road to Hobo Camp after the gate. This parking must only be on the uphill side of the road and you must be pointed in the direction to LEAVE Hobo Camp. There is NO parking on the Fire Roads. 2. There is some parking at Miller Road at the Bizz Johnson Trail (You must not park blocking the Bizz Johnson Trail). This is a short walk of about .25 mile from the start line. 3. There is a LOT of parking at the Bizz Johnson Trailhead across from the Susanville Historic Train Depot at 601 Richmond Road. This is about .75 mi from the start line. This is a flat, easy walk. One option would be to bring your bicycle and ride to the start. It is a flat, easy, short ride. There will be a place at the finish line to lock your bike and leave your keys with the Race Director. Packet Pickup: Packet Pickup will be at the Susanville Historic Train Depot at 601 Richmond Road on Friday, June 21st from 3 PM until 6 PM. Late Registration will be available on Friday at packet pickup. Race Day morning packet pickup will be available at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area (Finish Line Area) beginning at 6 AM. There will be limited race day registration from 6 - 6:45 AM (22K), 6 - 7:15 AM (14K), and 6 - 7:30 AM (7K). Post-Race Activities The Finish Line is approximately .1 mile from the Start Line. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and EZ-up and hang out on the grass watching the other finishers. We will have hotdogs, watermelon, water, sodas, and non-alcoholic brews from Athletic Brewing Company for runners. If your family wants to join you, there are several newer charcoal BBQs in the day use area. The river has excellent access at the Day Use area so cooling off is a MUST! This race is capped at 150 runners total for all 3 events!
