The Experience

The Big Island International Marathon, also known as the Hilo Marathon, unfolds annually in March along the historic coast of Hilo, Hawaii. This race offers a distinct Pacific island running experience, with the half-marathon course tracing the old coastline.

The event, first run in 2009 and now in its 17th year, typically sees around 487 finishers, drawing participants from approximately 19 states. The course is primarily a road race, characterized by a flat profile with minimal elevation change, making it a potentially fast option for runners. The typical winning time hovers around 67 minutes, indicating a competitive field.

Runners can expect a unique atmosphere, with packet pickup and an expo held the day before the race at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. While repeat-runner loyalty is around 18%, the race offers a compelling draw for those seeking a destination event with a blend of local charm and athletic challenge.
