The Experience

The Hillbilly Hike Half Marathon, first run in 2014 and now in its 12th edition, has become a beloved fixture in the Iowa running scene. This point-to-point race, which also includes a 10K and 5K, draws participants from around 15 states, with about 26% returning year after year, testament to its enduring appeal.

Runners consistently praise the course for its flat and fast profile, primarily utilizing the scenic Summerset Trail connecting Indianola and Carlisle. This terrain is ideal for setting personal bests, with the half marathon featuring a gentle downhill start before leveling out. The race is USATF certified, with a net drop and 74% start/finish separation, further enhancing its reputation as a PR-friendly event.

The atmosphere is marked by strong community involvement and dedicated volunteers, creating a welcoming environment. Despite its smaller field size, typically around 223 finishers for the half marathon, the finish line in Carlisle buzzes with festive music, delicious local treats like pie and biscuits and gravy, and a celebratory PR Bell. Custom die-cast medals and soft t-shirts are among the appreciated perks.
