The Experience

On a chilly November morning, runners gather at Lt Ross Memorial Park in Peabody, Massachusetts, for the Livestrong at the Y Half Marathon and 5K. This inaugural event, hosted by the YMCA of Metro North, benefits the Livestrong at the Y program, a 12-week initiative helping cancer survivors rebuild strength and confidence. With a field of about 130 half marathon finishers coming from seven states, this race has the intimate, purposeful feel of a community coming together for a cause.

The half marathon course follows a flat, accessible loop through the town's streets and parkland, making it an ideal choice for first-timers or those chasing a fast time on a certified course. The late-fall weather typically brings cool temperatures in the mid-30s to 40s, with a brisk wind from the northwest. Runners are supported by aid stations and volunteers, and the atmosphere is low-key and supportive. Post-race, participants enjoy refreshments and a commemorative T-shirt. With a companion 5K offering a family rate, this event is designed for all ages and abilities. It's a race that proves a small event can make a big impact.
