The Experience

With just over 60 finishers in its most recent edition, the Smelter City Scamper is a true community affair, drawing runners from seven states to the small Montana town of Anaconda. Starting and finishing at Kennedy Commons, this half marathon is the centerpiece of a race day that also includes a 10K, 5K, and a free kids’ sprint.

The race is organized by the Anaconda Community Market as a fundraiser for food access and community health. New for 2026, the Scamper is transitioning to a cupless event, with the first 300 registrants receiving a free Hydrapak reusable cup and all runners getting a discount on gear—a forward-thinking move that reflects the race’s commitment to sustainability and healthy lifestyles.

This is not a race for crowds or pomp; it’s a low-key, high-heart event where locals and visitors alike line up for a shared purpose. The course is flat and fast (the 2024 winner clocked a 1:22:58), and the post-race vibe is all about connection—celebrating the community that makes it happen.

Race-provided description

Led by the Anaconda Community Market, the Scamper welcomes runners, walkers, families, and longtime locals alike. A hometown race with lots of heart!  Whether you’re lining up for the half marathon, jogging the 5K with friends, or watching kids sprint their hearts out for one block, this race is about showing up, for yourself and for your community. We're partnering with Hydrapak and going cupless this year—here’s what that means (and why it’s a good thing): New for 2026: Cupless Race Initiative As part of our commitment to healthier lifestyles—for both people and the planet—we’re beginning the transition to a cupless race. This means reducing single-use waste and encouraging runners to carry their own hydration. For this year: We’re easing into the change. Cups will still be available on course as we transition. Bonus perks: The first 300 racers at packet pickup will receive a free reusable cup from Hydrapak All racers will get a 20% discount to shop Hydrapak gear We’re excited to take this step forward—start thinking about what hydration setup works best for you, and we’ll keep supporting you along the way. Race Events: All races start and finish at Kennedy Commons. Half Marathon - 7:30am 10K - 8:00am  5K - 8:30am  Kids Sprint (1 block, ages 8 & under – free) - 10:30am Why We Run The Smelter City Scamper is a fundraiser that supports the Anaconda Community Market and local food access programs.
