Sandhills Marathon

The Sandhills Marathon, now in its 20th year, is a race for those who crave solitude. The half marathon (and full) unfolds on Seneca Road, a one-lane blacktop cutting through the vast Nebraska Sandhills. This is ranch country—waves of grass and sand, with only the occasional cattle guard to break the rhythm. There are no crowds, no music blaring from speakers; just the sound of your own footsteps and the wind across the prairie.

The course, which the website describes as a loop, follows a single lane of asphalt that seems to disappear into the horizon. The elevation is relatively flat, but the landscape itself undulates gently, and the exposed route can be a factor under the Nebraska sun. Runners from about five states travel here each year, drawn by the challenge and the stark beauty. The field is small—only 27 tracked finishers in recent years—and the experience is intimate.

The finish returns to Brownlee, a tiny unincorporated community. There's a T-shirt for every finisher, and the post-race atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect: low-key, with runners swapping stories of the road. This is a hidden gem for anyone who believes that running is about getting away from it all.
