The Experience

Devil After Dark is an intimate night half-marathon that starts just before sunset and runs through Lovell Canyon in Nevada’s Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. With only about 52 finishers from roughly 13 states, the race feels like a secret gathering—a small community of runners drawn to the magic of a late-summer evening in the high desert.

The course follows a canyon route, winding among Pinion Juniper trees as the day’s last light paints the sky and the stars emerge. The full moon and distant glow of the Las Vegas Strip provide the only illumination, creating an atmosphere that’s both serene and otherworldly. The trail is runnable and reportedly flat, though the terrain is natural and unpaved—a true trail experience under a canopy of moonlight.

Despite the small field, the event is part of a larger Running with the Devil series, offering a well-organized experience with gender-specific shirts and distances from 5K to marathon. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking a unique night run in a dramatic setting, where the neon of Vegas is minutes away but feels a world apart.

Race-provided description

Over the years, one of my favorite times at our Running with the Devil extreme heat race in late June is when the sun sets, and the night air just beckons you to be outside and run! Devil After Dark brings you that magic with a late summer evening run. Commencing just before sunset, run through Lovell Canyon while enjoying the stunning sunset as day falls into night. Sun is replaced by stars and moonlight lights the way. The omnipresence of the surrounding canyon under the moonlit starry night is magical! Pinion Juniper trees dance in the shadows and the neon lights of Las Vegas are just minutes away. An enchanted late summer evening run. *This event is held on the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, under a special use permit.
