1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut

Now in its 15th year, the 1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut half-marathon is a beloved summer tradition in Philadelphia's Pennypack Park. Drawing roughly 736 runners from half a dozen states, about 13% return year after year, drawn by the unique blend of challenging terrain and gemütlichkeit. The course is a mix of paved bike path and dirt trail, winding along Pennypack Creek under a canopy of trees that provides shade for about 90% of the route.

Don't let the flat-sounding name fool you: this is not a PR course. The second and third quarters are marked by short, steep rolling hills that, combined with June humidity, take a toll. As one runner notes, 'they are not kidding that it is not easy and you should not expect to PR.' But the scenery—rippling creek, forested parkland, and occasional off-track sections—makes it a joy for a more leisurely effort. The half is an out-and-back; full marathoners do the half twice.

The post-race scene is the real payoff: a German beer garden with light snacks, plus a quality pullover and a cuckoo-clock-themed award for top age-groupers. With affordable entry and legendary aid stations, this is a well-organized, community-driven event that rewards those who embrace the spirit—lederhosen optional, but encouraged.
