The Experience
Summerville's Sweet Tea Half Marathon, first run in 2014 and now in its 11th edition, offers a charming Southern experience. The course winds through pleasant neighborhoods and along a recreational path, providing a scenic backdrop for runners. While the terrain is largely road, some reviews mention slight, steady inclines in the later miles, particularly a 100-foot climb over the final four miles.
The race aims for a community feel, with live entertainment and spirited aid stations encouraging runner votes. Despite a median field size of around 285 finishers and a shrinking trend, the event draws participants from approximately 14 states. A repeat runner rate of about 18% indicates a loyal following, drawn to the opportunity for age group placements and the unique post-race reward: a taste of Summerville's World's Largest Sweet Tea.
Runners can expect a well-supported course with helpful volunteers and enthusiastic local first responders. The event provides a 1/4 Zip Long Sleeve as swag and a cute medal, contributing to a positive race day experience, especially for those seeking a less crowded, more personal event.
