The Experience

The Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon, first run in 2002 and now in its 18th edition, offers a picturesque journey through Vermont's Champlain Islands. Runners traverse the west shore of South Hero and Grand Isle, passing by farms, apple orchards, and summer cottages on a course known for its flat to rolling terrain.

This paved, out-and-back course is USATF-certified and provides a relatively fast environment, with aid stations approximately every two miles. While the field size has recently been around 252 finishers, the race draws participants from approximately 27 states, indicating a solid geographic reach. The event concludes near the former residence of Clarence H. DeMar, a seven-time Boston Marathon winner, adding a touch of running history.

With a repeat-runner loyalty of about 12%, the race fosters a dedicated following. Participants can expect a T-shirt as swag, and the event aims to provide a well-supported experience with sweep vehicles and ample aid stations. The maximum field size is capped at 500, encouraging early registration.
