The Experience

The North Olympic Discovery Marathon unfolds along Washington's scenic Olympic Peninsula, a point-to-point journey that showcases the majestic Olympic Mountains and the shimmering Strait of Juan de Fuca. Runners traverse the Olympic Discovery Trail, a wide, 99% paved path that winds through natural beauty.

Frequent sightings of seals, eagles, and diverse birdlife are common along the route, with iconic trestle bridges adding to the picturesque backdrops. The course is USATF certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier, attracting approximately 1,266 finishers recently, with about 26% returning year after year. This beloved event, first run in 2003 and now in its 23rd year, draws participants from around 26 states.

The marathon concludes with a five-mile stretch along the Strait's shores, offering a memorable finish. Participants receive a long-sleeve 1/4 zip with thumbholes as a giveaway, and the race is organized by the dedicated Port Angeles Marathon Association.

The North Olympic Discovery Marathon, Marathon Walk, Marathon Relay and Half Marathon take place on a unique point to point course that incorporates the beautiful Olympic Discovery Trail with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and a five mile finishing stretch along the shores of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The 10K,  5K and Kids Marathon are an out-and-back along the shores of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Frequent sightings of seals, eagles, and an array of shore birds are common from the trail. Iconic trestle bridges provide beautiful back drops. Salmon can be seen spawning at the Morse Creek crossing in the fall. The North Olympic Discovery Marathon is truly one of the most beautiful marathon venues anywhere. This rails to trails course is a wide, hard surface (99% paved) trail. The course is marked at every mile and water stations are located approximately every two miles. Cool June weather can be expected  – average high is 65F, average low is 49F, average mean is 57F. The race is organized by the Port Angeles Marathon Association – a group of accomplished amateur athletes. The Marathon is a USATF certified course and a Boston Marathon qualifier.
