The Experience
This half marathon, first run in 1979 and now in its 31st year, offers a unique journey through Maine's scenic Acadia National Park. Runners traverse nine miles of the park's historic, hard-packed carriage roads, originally built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to avoid automobiles.
The course begins in the charming fishing town of Bar Harbor before venturing into the park. Participants will experience the dense forest, crossing antique granite bridges as the route loops back to town. With approximately 246 finishers recently, drawing runners from about 33 states, this race offers a distinctive blend of history and natural beauty.
Finishers receive medals, and participants receive T-shirts. The race, held annually, is noted for its historic route and the serene, wooded environment of Acadia National Park.
Race-provided description
In 1913, John Rockefeller Jr. built a series of carriage roads so he could avoid cars in the Acadia National Park. Nine miles of the Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Half Marathon run on that still-existing system of hard-packed trails. The hilly course starts in the small, picturesque fishing town of Bar Harbor, then cuts into the National Park. Dense forest engulfs runners as they cross several old granite bridges before looping back to town. Packet Pickup on Friday, September 11, 2026, times TBD. NO RACE DAY PACKET PICKUP We do NOT mail out packets. Medals are awarded to all Finishers. Tshirts for all half marathon participants and the first 50 5k participants to register.
