The Experience
The Cedar City Half Marathon descends through a spectacular canyon, offering a unique point-to-point experience that closes the road to traffic. Runners are bused to the start line at Wood Ranch, beginning their journey at 7:00 AM amidst crisp canyon air and the sounds of Coal Creek. The course winds through ancient geological formations, transitioning from SR-14 onto Cedar City's trail system along Coal Creek. This scenic route, featuring sandstone pyramids and wooded sections, leads runners through Canyon Park and Veterans Ball Fields to a welcoming finish at the Bicentennial Soccer Complex.
This race, first run in 2002 and now in its 17th year, emphasizes a quality runner experience. The closed canyon ensures a traffic-free environment, a rarity for road and trail races. Enthusiastic volunteers staff aid stations, and the course is enhanced by elements like a band at mile 12 and bagpipers, creating a memorable atmosphere. The Utah Highway Patrol reopens the canyon to traffic at 10:00 AM, ensuring all runners are off the highway by then, with the final three miles on the trail system.

Whether it's the sound of Coal Creek, breathtaking views, enthusiastic aid station volunteers, or energy-pumping music with crowds urging you to finish strong—the focus of the "Cedar Half" has always been on a quality runner experience over quantity. On race day, Cedar Canyon is closed to all vehicles, and at the mouth of Cedar Canyon all runners will transition onto Cedar's magnificent trail system all the way to the finish line. The CourseThe crisp canyon air rushes through aspens and the sounds of water rushing down Coal Creek accompany runners as they wind their way through eons of geologic formations to the mouth of Cedar Canyon. Majestic sandstone pyramids mark the intersection of the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountain formation. This is where runners will transition from SR-14 to Cedar City's spectacular trail system along Coal Creek through Canyon Park, Veterans Ball Fields, and the welcoming finish at the Bicentennial Soccer Complex. Along the Coal Creek Trail System there are three road underpasses allowing runners to avoid street traffic.
